As people’s tastes in content become more sophisticated, the tools used to create such content also need to evolve. But rather than simply throwing in more hardware at the problem, PC makers like Acer are trying to push the boundaries of what’s possible when it comes to raw power while still keeping designs clean, elegant, and light. Part of that relies on using AI to not only optimize the computer’s operations but also provide creators with tools that make their work feel almost effortless.

At CES 2025, Acer is announcing a wide range of designs that deliver this kind of power to consumers, gamers, creators, and everyone in between. Whether you’re looking for a lightweight laptop or an AI-enhanced desktop, the brand’s family of Swift and Aspire computers promises to help designers, developers, and knowledge workers make the best use of their time and resources by simplifying workflows and providing tools to make tasks a breeze.

]]>

After some hardware failures like the infamous Zune and the under-appreciated Windows Phone, Microsoft seems to have struck Gold with the Surface 2-in-1 tablets. It gave the tech company the boldness to go all in on that brand to the point of discontinuing its other hardware products, particularly its line of computer accessories. That definitely disappointed a few fans, especially those waiting for Microsoft’s next ergonomic keyboard to break cover.

Fortunately, one big fan decided to take up the cause and bought the manufacturing rights from Microsoft and pick up where it left off. Not only did it decide to revive some of the peripherals Microsoft discontinued, it also just released a new ergonomic keyboard that was previously rumored but never launched, adding a rather interesting entry into this category of desktop computing accessories.

Designer: Incase, Microsoft

As critical as keyboards might be in using computers, few people give them a second thought until their hands start hurting. That’s why the so-called ergonomic keyboards are quite the hot item among writers, programmers, and other avid computer users, and their designs are as varied as their prices. Almost every major manufacturer has one, including Microsoft before it axed everything but its Surface products.

The Incase Compact Ergonomic Keyboard brings to life a design that was supposed to have been shuttered along with Microsoft’s accessories business. Truth be told, this contoured split keyboard design is nothing new and is actually a bit similar to the discontinued Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic Keyboard. One big difference is the absence of the stylistic notch in the middle, giving the newer version a cleaner and more elegant appearance.

The Incase keyboard is also more compact, leaving more room on your desk for other peripherals or items. That said, the cushioned wrist rests are permanently attached to the keyboard, so you’ll have to make sure to have plenty of room for that. This Compact Ergonomic Keyboard is also completely wireless and can pair with up to three devices via Bluetooth.

The most interesting detail about this keyboard is that it runs solely on two AAA batteries that are advertised to last about 36 months. There are no ports on the keyboard at all, so there’s no way for you to charge the batteries inside either. It’s an odd design choice but could appeal to those who find such internal batteries cumbersome and short-lived. The Incase Compact Ergonomic Keyboard goes for only $120, which is significantly cheaper than high-end ergo keyboards but definitely within the range of rival designs from Logitech. It also already includes two AAA batteries inside the box, so buyers won’t have to worry about buying them separately.

]]>

There is still some debate about the benefits of curved screens at home, whether they can really replicate the cinematic experience of movie houses or are just marketing hype. There’s also the promise of a more ergonomic display because of how they conform to the natural angle of our vision. Some people swear by curved screens, especially when it comes to more immersive content like movies and video games, but not everyone is a believer.

With many brands seemingly falling head over heels with curves, there seem to be fewer choices for flat-screeners. Even worse, you’re forced to make an upfront decision when making a purchase, without the option to change your mind later at no cost. If we already have phones that can fold in half, it shouldn’t be a huge leap to have monitors that can change their shape on a whim, which is exactly what LG is bringing to gamers’ desks in glorious 5K2K resolution.

Designer: LG

There are benefits and disadvantages to both curved and flat monitors, but people’s preferences can change every now and then. While movies and games might look great on a curved screen, regular applications and windows might look distorted. Content creation software that relies on accuracy and precision doesn’t benefit from such technology either, but there’s no way users can switch between the two modes unless they have different displays for different needs.

The upcoming LG UltraGear OLED Bendable Gaming Monitor (model 45GX990A) promises the flexibility to adjust to your needs without wasting money on extra equipment you might use only occasionally. The 45-inch monitor can go from flat to a 900R curvature in just a few seconds, making it possible to seamlessly switch between use cases in a snap. LG also promotes the monitor’s ability to quickly switch between resolution and refresh rate presets in order to match your needs.

To be clear, this is not the world’s first bendable monitor, but it is the first one to come with a very high 5K2K (5,120 x 2,160) resolution. The monitor’s 21:9 ultra-wide aspect ratio is also a boon to gamers who usually need more screen real estate at the sides than a taller canvas. That said, the monitor does feature a Dual-Mode function that lets you switch between 21:9 and 16:9 aspect ratios as well as different picture sizes for compatibility with different types of content.

LG is also announcing two other curved monitors that don’t change their shape for those ready to go all in on that kind of display. The 45-inch UltraGear 45GX950A boasts a more pronounced 800R curvature while the 39-inch UltraGear 39GX90SA offers a slightly more compact size, both with wide 21:9 aspect ratios. All three monitors come with LG’s WOLED (White OLED with color filters) technology for even better color reproduction that both gamers and creators demand. Availability of these new curved LG monitors has yet to be announced, but they will be showcased at CES 2025 next year.

]]>

The Apple Mac mini helped make mini PCs trendy, but like any mini PC, it is also hampered by limitations of its design. Make no mistake, it’s a powerful computer for its size, but its elegant minimalist design has inspired not a few docks and accessories to compensate for its perceived flaws in equally stylish ways. Some docks, for example, mirror the design language of the Mac mini to masquerade as a natural extension of the small box.

One design quirk that the new M4-powered Mac mini has, however, is the position of the power button at the bottom, forcing owners to tilt the box up just to power it on after shutting it down. While there are many ways to get around this odd design, one solution tries to change the identity of the Mac mini at the same time by making it look like a true miniature version of the current-gen Mac Pro desktop.

Designer: ZEERA

Truth be told, the Mac Pro design is a bit divisive even among Apple fans. After the notorious “trash can” 2013 Mac Pro, the current design has been derisively nicknamed “cheese grater” because of its aluminum body paired with perforated front and back sides. In contrast, the Mac mini has retained its rather simple box appearance while sticking to the minimalist design language that Apple has been famous for.

The ZEERA MacForge case for the Mac mini M4 completely flips that identity while also flipping the Mac mini to stand on its side. Technically, the enclosure is labeled as a cooling case exactly because of that orientation. With the cooling fan facing sideways, there is better airflow compared to when it is blocked by a table. The aluminum material of the case also helps draw heat away from the Mac mini, creating a passive cooling solution as well.

That vertical orientation also solves the aforementioned design oddity of the M4 Mac mini. The power button is now more accessible and exposed via a protruding metal button at the side. It might be a small thing for Mac mini users who put their computers to sleep rather than shutting them down, but more energy-conscious owners will appreciate that small quality of life improvement.

The ZEERA MacForge tries to emulate the design of the Mac Pro in more ways than the towering position. It has handles at the top that make it easier to carry the Mac mini around with just a single finger. It also has elongated holes in the front more for embellishment than thermal management. The $160 price tag (currently $130 during the pre-order period) might seem excessive, but the CNC aluminum construction promises durability and elegance that 3D printed enclosures can hardly match.

When Apple’s M4 Mac Mini made its debut, it was like watching a masterclass in minimalism meet maximum performance. But for all its streamlined brilliance, the base model’s 256 GB SSD feels a bit like a tiny closet in a stylish apartment—it’s there, it works, but you’ll outgrow it before you know it. And if you’ve peeked at Apple’s upgrade pricing, you know adding more space feels like almost buying an entire new device rather than paying for an upgrade.

Enter the ORICO MiniMate, a nifty external SSD that doesn’t just sit alongside your Mac Mini—it practically becomes part of it. However, rather than merely being an enclosure you hide behind your monitor or CPU, the MiniMate sits on your M4 Mac Mini like a crown jewel. The MiniMate is a perfect 127 x 127 mm square, with a svelte 25 mm thickness, so it stacks absolutely perfectly on the Mac Mini. That brushed aluminum finish in matching silver? It almost looks like Apple designed it.

Designer: ORICO

Beyond aesthetics, the MiniMate caters to those with serious storage appetites. Whether you’re a creative professional juggling terabytes of video files or someone who just can’t part with your decades-old MP3 collection, the MiniMate covers all bases. With options starting at 512 GB and going all the way up to a whopping 8 TB, it’s like opening the floodgates to storage heaven. And for those who’ve ever scrambled to free up space mid-project, having that extra headroom feels less like a luxury and more like a necessity.

To match the Mac Mini’s M4 performance, the MiniMate boasts pretty top-notch performance. The USB-C interface supports blistering 40 Gbps transfer speeds. Translation? If you’re a video editor moving massive 4K files or a gamer itching to load textures at warp speed, this drive will keep up with your pace. Even mundane tasks like backups or transferring family vacation photos become a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it operation. It’s hard to go back to sluggish transfer rates once you’ve tasted speed like this. Performance like that tends to crank up the temperature, but the MiniMate’s aluminum body doubles as a heatsink, while a 5-layer cooling structure with multiple air ducts keeps your SSD breezy.

But here’s where the MiniMate shines beyond just technical specs: its seamless user experience. Installation is delightfully straightforward—no complex setup processes or additional software to fiddle with. You stack it, plug it in, and you’re good to go. It’s almost as if Apple themselves had designed it, which makes sense given how neatly it integrates with the Mac Mini’s form and function. And for those of us who value tidy workspaces, that single-stack design eliminates the usual cable clutter dance.

While the ORICO MiniMate is tailored with the Mac Mini in mind, it’s not exclusive. It’ll happily work with other devices too, making it a versatile addition to any tech setup. But let’s be real: if you’ve got a Mac Mini, this pairing feels like peanut butter meeting jelly—it just makes sense.

What’s the catch, you ask? Well, ORICO has priced the MiniMate competitively, offering a premium product without Apple’s premium markup. Depending on the capacity you choose, prices vary, ranging from $139.99 for the 512GB variant going up all the way to a mind-bending 8TB for $999. You can also expand the internal storage as needed, rather than being locked into a one-time decision at purchase.

For Mac Mini users craving more space without sacrificing style, the ORICO MiniMate isn’t just an accessory; it’s a game-changer. Whether you’re editing a short film, booting up your favorite games, or just need room for every photo you’ve ever taken, this drive delivers both performance and polish. And honestly, isn’t it nice to have a tech upgrade that’s practical, beautiful, and doesn’t require an Apple Store appointment?

The arrival of the Raspberry Pi really revolutionized not just the computer education market that it targeted but also hobbyists, makers, and all sorts of creators. It offered a computer that, while not as powerful as the weakest laptop in the market, could handle a variety of applications, from programming to word processing to smart home automation. Best of all, it was affordable at only $50 on average.

While the RPi, as it is lovingly called, is now used to power no small number of DIY projects that need a discrete but capable computer, its true calling is still providing that computing power for students, home users, and everyone in between. That’s the calling that Raspberry Pi’s new dynamic duo is answering, providing a simple and minimalist desktop computer at a fraction of the price.

Designer: Raspberry Pi Foundation

The Raspberry Pi is a single-board computer or SBC that shatters misconceptions of what computers look like. Rather than a towering desktop or a slim laptop, you get a credit card-sized electronics board with ports rising from its top. It is definitely a complete computer, but one that needs a keyboard, a display, and a power supply to use like a normal computer.

The Raspberry Pi 500 carries on the new tradition of providing a ready-to-use solution for people who just want a usable Linux computer without having to worry about cases or cables to connect peripherals. It’s part of a rare breed of computers that are hiding inside a keyboard, which is fortunately the right amount of space required by the Raspberry Pi. Although the layout of ports on the back of the keyboard is different, it has the exact number of them, including the 40-pin GPIO connector for experiments and fun.

Of course, you can’t really use a computer these days without some sort of display, so Raspberry Pi launched its own 15.6-inch Monitor for that very purpose. Designed to work with any Raspberry Pi model, in fact, any HDMI device, it fits the use case of the RPi 500 perfectly. Together, you practically have a space-saving computer that only needs a 5V power supply to work. Yes, you’ll need a mouse, too, but Raspberry Pi also sells one, fortunately.

Admittedly, this “Raspberry Pi Desktop” won’t win awards in terms of power, and not everyone will be comfortable using Linux as their operating system. That said, the combo does provide unique value for Linux and power users who want a low-profile, low-power, but still capable desktop computer for their daily needs. Plus, it’s the Raspberry Pi, so you can connect a whole host of other devices, sensors, and DIY components to take it beyond its advertised purposes.

]]>

The transparent green of the original Xbox wasn’t some random design choice; it was a symbol of an era when consoles began showcasing their inner workings, literally. Multiple game consoles opted for the see-through aesthetic (notably Nintendo), with even Steve Jobs and Apple jumping onto the bandwagon with their candy-colored Macs. That same transparency has found new relevance in today’s tech landscape, led by companies like Nothing, which has revitalized see-through aesthetics. Given that fashion trends are cyclical, and that everyone loves a little bit of reminiscing, 8BitDo’s Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard and Retro R8 Mouse – Xbox Edition – reimagine nostalgia with a modern twist, bringing Xbox-inspired designs into everyday peripherals.

The Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard feels like a portal back to the early 2000s, dressed in the same vibrant green hue that adorned the iconic Transparent Green Xbox. But this is more than a mere homage. With Kailh Jellyfish X switches under its keys, the keyboard offers a typing experience that’s satisfyingly tactile and precise. Gamers and typists alike will appreciate the n-key rollover and the durability of its double-layered ABS keycaps. A matte UV coating ensures that every keystroke leaves its mark on your gaming session, not the hardware.

Designer: 8bitdo

As you plug it in, the keyboard’s RGB backlight adds a dynamic edge, bathing your setup in customizable color. This lighting isn’t purely decorative; it’s a visual companion, perfect for late-night gaming marathons or a subtle office glow. The multiple connectivity options—wired USB, 2.4 GHz wireless, and Bluetooth 5.0—make it as versatile as it is stylish. Whether tethered to a Windows machine or paired with an Android device, the Retro 87 maintains seamless functionality.

However, the quirks in compatibility might give you pause. Despite being an Xbox-licensed product, the keyboard doesn’t officially support Xbox consoles. This limitation is peculiar, especially considering the design roots. Yet, in practical terms, its focus on PC and mobile connectivity ensures broader utility for everyday users.

The Retro R8 Mouse, on the other hand, feels like the keyboard’s adventurous sibling. Compact and lightweight at just 77 grams, it glides effortlessly across surfaces, guided by the PAW 3395 sensor. Gamers will love the six adjustable DPI levels, which allow precise cursor control for every genre, from FPS headshots to strategic command-and-conquer moves. The variable polling rate, configurable through 8BitDo’s Ultimate Software, ensures that every click feels instant, a vital feature in competitive gaming.

What truly sets the mouse apart, though, is its charging dock. Echoing the same transparent green finish, the dock doubles as a display piece, proudly showcasing the mouse while keeping it charged. Battery life is another highlight—100 hours in Bluetooth mode or up to 105 hours with 2.4 GHz wireless. These figures underscore 8BitDo’s commitment to practicality, ensuring you spend more time gaming and less time hunting for a charging cable.

Together, these peripherals serve as a love letter to both Xbox fans and design enthusiasts. The attention to detail, from the hardware choices to the nostalgic color palette, speaks to a brand that understands the importance of aesthetics and functionality. Yet, this release isn’t just about looking back; it’s about reinterpreting the past for today’s tech-savvy users.

What makes 8BitDo’s approach so engaging is their willingness to embrace nostalgia without being shackled by it. The transparent green finish is an instant trip down memory lane – something 8bitdo’s done remarkably well with a lot of its retro-inspired hardware, especially hat-tipping the Nintendo NES.

For anyone who grew up with an Xbox controller in hand, these devices are bound to evoke a smile. But they’re not just for retro enthusiasts. Whether you’re a gamer looking for performance upgrades or a design aficionado drawn to the interplay of form and function, the Retro 87 and R8 Mouse deliver a blend of familiarity and innovation that’s hard to resist. It’s nostalgia with a purpose—because sometimes, looking back is the best way to move forward.

The popularity of the Mac mini has made small desktop computers quite the fad. Especially with small components getting more powerful, it’s now possible to have a decent desktop experience in a small box. What isn’t possible, however, is enjoying the same range and variety of ports available on towers, at least not without some outside help.

Docks for mini PCs aren’t new, but the Mac mini does present some very particular design challenges. How do you make a dock that isn’t just functional but also just as aesthetic as the Mac mini itself? That’s the puzzle that this new dock for the latest Apple mini computer tries to solve using a large number of ports, a hidden SSD enclosure, and a rather peculiar appearance.

Designer: RayCue

The Mac mini has always been designed to be discreet and subtle so it could be hidden from view while it does its job. Lately, however, the trend has been to actually show off the beautiful minimalism of these small boxes, though that also meant exposing hubs and docks that extend the modest port selection of the mini computer. Rather than those conventional long bars, hubs made specifically for the Mac mini are designed to sit beneath the computer, blending in as if part of Apple’s design itself.

RayCue’s hub and stand for the newest Mac mini M4 and M4 Pro follow that trend, adopting the same silver colorway as the Mac mini itself as well as its length and width. It sits below the Mac mini, leaving a slight gap in between for better airflow. A rather interesting design choice, however, is the raised fins radiating from the center of the dock, perhaps acting as passive cooling for the small yet powerful computer.

The RayCue Mac mini M4 dock expands the port selection with 10 different connectivity options, including an additional HDMI port for a dual display setup that doesn’t sacrifice a Thunderbolt port. Just like the Mac mini itself, it’s designed to have the most often accessed ports in the front, leaving the more “stationary” ones on the back.

Another trend in this product category is using the spacious dock for additional storage. The RayCue dock and stand supports a variety of M.2 NVMe SSD sizes up to 4TB in capacity, almost double the maximum Mac mini configuration available. Stylish and functional, it’s a perfect complement to the elegant Mac mini M4, one that will, however, cost you $99 without a $20 pre-order discount.

Let’s be honest Windows 11 is not perfect, evolving at an agonizingly slow pace. This has pushed many power users down the Apple alley. The recently launched Mac Mini has a lot going in its favor, further creating a deep divide between the Microsoft and Apple options.

As a last-ditch effort to save the glitchy Windows 11 OS and very less options to choose from that bind the hardware and software for a seamless experience, Microsoft has introduced the Windows 365 Link mini PC strictly limited to cloud usage in a walled environment. The portable CPU is targeted towards big organizations and businesses who give a lot of weightage to security and keeping the working environment productive.

Designer: Microsoft

Targeted towards enterprise users

This is the world’s first dedicated “boot to cloud” device that runs Windows 11 OS via the Windows 365 link on the Windows 365 servers. Priced at $349 it is specifically designed to run Windows 365 Cloud PCs, and you need a Windows 365 subscription to get started. That adds another $28 to $315 per month. It’s still not clear whether the mini PC will get the extra perk of a subscription discount as a bundle, but we hope so.

The most popular option for employees is a $66 per month per user with applications including Microsoft Teams and browsers. Include the $349 hardware cost of the Windows mini PC and you’ve got a fat bill of $2,000 for a closed ecosystem with limited applications. Compare that to the $1,300 price tag for the 15-inch touchscreen Microsoft Surface Laptop powered by the Snapdragon X Elite chip and having 256GB storage. Clearly, Microsoft’s compact PC is not targeted towards individual users, and in no way competes with Apple’s powerhouse mini PC.

Security takes center stage

This 120 x 120 x 30 mm desktop PC has a fanless design, and comes with a 3.5mm audio jack, three USB-A ports, one USB-C port, an HDMI port, and a single DisplayPort output. There’s one Ethernet port, WiFi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.3 for wireless connectivity. The mini PC is designed for specific requirements where workers need to be quickly rotated between workstations and securely access their files. This eliminates the hassle of configuring the user settings and saving time. Also, the PC is ideal for setups where cloud-based software and hardware integration takes precedence.

Windows 365 Link will be available for purchase in April 2025 – that’s a long way off. However, one can enroll for the preview program in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Germany, Japan, Australia, or New Zealand. Interested users can join the program before December 15 with permission from the Microsoft account team.
