CES is not so much an auto event – barring some automotive tech demonstrations – but that hasn’t been a deterrent for AeroHT. It has been setting Las Vegas in top gear with the showcase of its two-part flying car for two years now. The marketable combo of a land vehicle and eVTOL aircraft from AeroHT we first saw last year at CES was slated to ship in the US in mid-2024. The aviation wing of the Chinese automaker XPeng may be running behind schedule, but its arrival at CES 2025 with the news that it has 3,000 intent orders for the vehicle, we are positive it will pull off production within a year.

Dubbed the Land Aircraft Carrier, AeroHT eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) flying car is designed and developed to be a “modular flying car”: It is not a single vehicle that would take off from the spot when you’re stuck in a traffic snarl. It’s actually an electric van with a small folding eVTOL vehicle hiding in the trunk that unfolds and takes off at the push of a button.

Designer: AeroHT

The mother unit – comprising the all-electric car and the manned drone – is a five-seater land cruiser that can drive like a normal car on the road. And when you want to skip the road, or reach a destination quicker, you can head back to the two-seater air module (the eVTOL aircraft) from the rear hatch – detach and unfold it – and take off into the skies sitting relaxed in its cockpit made of carbon fiber.

So, you do not require a large expensive hangar. Aero HT’s Land Aircraft Carrier will allow you to drive and – at will – transfer into the eVTOL to take off. After the fun in the sky, when you have reached your destination, land vertically without a runway, and the air module will reconnect with the 6×6 all-wheel-drive vehicle in the trunk. You can power on the engine and go!

The mother unit of the Land Aircraft Carrier works as a mobile charging station for the eVTOL, which is powered by a silicon carbide high-voltage platform. The air module has a dual-duct six-rotor design comprising foldable propellers and arms, and combined with the land vehicle it offers a range of over 621 miles.

We have learned about the new timelines of the Land Aircraft Carrier, which according to AeroHT is likely to go into production in 2025 with shipping expected to start in 2026. The timeline is vague and we might only be guessing when we can drive and fly out of the same vehicle, but now we have a figure we should be targeting to save to realize this dream: $300,000!

Honda has unveiled their new-age EVs under the Zero Series (paying homage to ASIMO robot) – one being a mid-sized SUV and the other a wedged Saloon, at CES 2025. These electric cars are heavily emphasized with the theme “thin, light, and wise.” To this accord the interior cabin space has been increased, the outside view unrestricted, and the seating flexibility position opening up many use-case scenarios. The cars will have Level 3 autonomy promising a laidback travel experience for riders.

Dubbed “0 SUV” based on the in-house Space Hub Concept and 0 Saloon based on the Saloon concept, both these vehicles caught a lot of attention at CES 2025. They are all set for release for the North American market in 2026 and will come with the latest Asimo operating system, pushing the Honda vehicles into the next generation. The 0 Series has a peculiar Aston Martin Lagonda Shooting Brake vibe which could indeed have some inspiration for the two concepts.

Designer: Honda

The concept prototypes showcased at the event looked more design-focused without being too impractical. 0 Saloon, the flagship model, was revealed first, and impressed with the sporty styling and low ride height. Compared to the Saloon concept it comes minus the gull-winged doors, having just the normal ones. Those headlights blink open much like the Lamborghini Countach which adds a nostalgic touch to the design. When the doors open, the yoke steering automatically rotates to one side so that the driver has no problem sliding in. The dash-sized screen on both cars is similar to the Afeela concept revealed earlier at the event.

0 SUV on the other hand looks more like a production-ready version and most probably will be the first one to roll off the production lines. The performance vehicle will rival Tesla’s big boy and it’ll be interesting to see how this market segment competes in the future. It’ll make use of the company’s inherent robotic technologies to enable dynamic riding tech to drive on any kind of road surface. On top of this, the vehicle will employ high-precision attitude estimation and stabilization control.

New material innovations that can substitute the use of ABS plastic piques my interest, as it should of those conscious of the e-waste we create daily. The production of computer peripherals has grown manifold but ethical ways to dispose of the plasticky waste and electronic components have not grown in the same propensity. To that accord, the idea of a BioHybrid Device for gaming that can grow through biofabrication instead of being constructed on an assembly line really brings forth a sustainable alternative we could love to embrace.

Designed and created by Vivien Roussel, Madalina Nicolae, and Marc Teyssier; BioHybrid Device video game controller is a combination of biological growth and digital fabrication. It is (according to the designers) grown using a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY). It is then integrated with sensors and electronic components – during the natural growth process – to create a real device you can play with. How cool is that?

Designers: Vivien Roussel, Madalina Nicolae and Marc Teyssier

The idea of the project kicked off with the question; “what if we could biologically grow interactive devices?” To achieve the proposed outcome, designers have fused electronic components into living organisms to produce interactive biohybrid devices. This provides us with an idea of a future where we can have natural devices that can develop, evolve, and eventually biodegrade at the end of life. We would still need ways to dispose of the electronics: maybe someone is thinking of fabricating them biologically as well.

The base biomaterial produced by the symbiosis of bacteria and yeast is a bacterial cellulose traditionally used for the creation of sustainable leather-like artifacts. Designers have leveraged this and used morphogenesis for embedding it with electronic components of a traditional controller to make this BioHybrid Device video game controller.

These biologically grown devices blur the boundaries between living and non-living systems, in the process opening up possibilities to create interactive devices through biological and digital fabrication for many other applications such as robotics, medical devices, and wearables, in addition to the proposed usage in gaming. While most of it looks impressive, such devices would entail a complex fabrication process and require more maintenance to remain functional for a longer time.

Want to travel around the block more conveniently without leaving a significant carbon footprint or traffic chaos? Personal mobility is the answer, and we’ve seen numerous startups and established manufacturers hop on to the idea to come up with their version.

Now, Singapore-based technology company Strutt has caught attention at CES 2025 for their practical electric vehicle dubbed ev1 targeted towards independent living. According to Tony Hong, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, “Our vision is to reimagine what a mobility device can be.” It’s not just about moving forward, rather it is about helping the masses with a solution that helps reduce every stress so that you can focus on important things in life.

Designer: Strutt

The ev1 mobility vehicle is distinct from the crowd because of its array of 3D LiADAR sensors and smart algorithm that creates a dynamic real-time map of the environment to facilitate smooth navigation through tight spaces or crowded streets. This is the same technology used in autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicles. It comes with the Strutt Smart Wheel system for superior comfort and control and features a beefy quad motor setup, intelligent drivetrain, and active all-terrain wheels. Thus, the micromobility vehicle has good torque for riding on challenging terrain. Added to the mix is an integrated suspension system and good ground clearance for stability and comfort. ev1 gets a sizable LFP battery configuration which is better than Li-ion batteries since they don’t catch fire and are long lasting.

The PMV has three modes for traveling in the city – Drive, Support and Glide. The Drive mode is for complete manual control, while the Support mode lets you control the drive, speed and direction via a joystick. Semi-autonomous control is provided with speed and brake assist to avoid any abrupt obstructions that you might miss. This is a basic safety feature in the personal mobility vehicle. Then there is the Glide mode that brings an elevated level of assist by enabling continuous adjustment of speed and direction. In this mode, the 3D path is plotted of the complex environment, and is well-suited for individuals who have some kind of disability. Basically, you can free yourself and let the vehicle do the driving for you!

Segway is well known for its self-balancing micro-mobility commuters but now they are expanding their claws into the e-bike segment too. At Consumer Electronics Show 2025 the company introduced two new e-bikes that are up for pre-order right away with deliveries expected in February. Christened the Xyber and the Xafari, both electric bikes designed to elevate the riding experience with safer, more convenient, and accessible features.

The bikes will come loaded with the Segway Intelligent Ride System and a range of smart tech and features. They’ll automatically shut down AirLock tech in case of theft, and the intelligent lighting system and even fitness data will be synchronized to the accompanying app. Also, the IOT features for remotely controlling the bikes, over-the-air updates and an automatic brightness adjustable TFT display make them a futureproof option.

Designer: Segway

Xyber is the beefier of the duo with design and performance aesthetics fit for the Cyberpunk universe. The e-bike comes with a 6,000-watt direct-drive motor system touting 175 Nm torque that makes it go from zero to 20 mph in a mere 2.7 seconds. The top speed of 35 mph makes it ideal for riders who crave a lasting adrenalin rush from an e-bike. The motocross-styled bike is going to be as good for dirt trails as it will be for the city thanks to the multi-surface 20 x 5.0-inch rugged terrain tires that are secured against any punctures courtesy of the flat-resistant inserts.

Segway brings the two-wheeler with an optional 2,880Wh dual battery for a range of 112 miles or a single battery that can tick 56 miles on a single charge. In case you run out of battery power there are pedals with 12 levels of assist. The version showcased at the event is in the unclassified segment (not street legal) but the buyable version coming later in spring/early summer 2025 will conform to Class-2 mandates. Xyber will be available in three drive modes – Eco, Sport, and Race – for a price tag of $3,000.

The Xafari is a little toned-down model for urban use with classic cruiser vibes, make no mistake, it still can traverse inhospitable terrain like its big brother. This e-bike comes with an adjustable 2.5 TFT display, seat height, stem, and handlebar for every rider’s comfort, no matter how tall or short they are. It rides on 26 x 3-inch tires and has an adjustable preload suspension with compression dampening and lockout on the fork.

The bike goes from zero to 20 miles per hour in 5.2 seconds which is good enough for city traffic. Xafari gets a removable 936 Kw battery that can be charged at home and on full charge it has a range of 88 miles. City errands are going to be a breeze with the rear-mounted rack and in-frame hardshell. There are also softshell bags for storing groceries or anything else on the go. Xafari coming in three drive settings will have pedal assist and throttle mode only. It is priced at $2,400, with availability set around the same time as Xyber.

At the ongoing CES 2025, Sony has launched the prototype of an extended reality headset dubbed XYN specifically for creating 3D spatial content. The Japanese consumer Electronics giant briefly previewed their motive to develop the headset at last year’s CES and now the wearable has got better with 4K OLED microdisplays and video passthrough tech.

XYN is a comprehensive software and hardware solution to support VR content creators to capture the precise details of the real-world environment and seamlessly integrate with an array of third-party tools for a flexible workflow. This makes complete sense as demand for mixed reality and virtual reality content is spiking. Making it easier for developers to create such content will push the whole wearable headset universe forward.

Designer: Sony

Creators can use the XYN in conjunction with Sony’s spatial content creation software to craft extended reality content including 3D objects, animations, and immersive games for Metaverse applications. When not in use the wearer can flip the headset up since they’ll be using it for long durations while creating content. The only thing missing this year compared to last year’s version is the pointer and ring on top. At the event, the headset was spotted in two colorways – black and gray. The price and release date of the headset are still uncertain, and we hope to hear more from Sony in the coming months.

Alongside the XYN headset, Sony has also revealed the Xyn Motion Studio which is a Windows app with support for up to 12 Mocopi sensors for an improved motion capture flow. This is often used by video content creators to control virtual avatars courtesy of the wireless motion tracking system. The advanced software enables the developers to cut or merge motions, as well as toggle the time and position. A prototype of the spatial capture solution is now capable of converting any real objects or mirrorless camera photos into photorealistic 3D computer-generated assets. The software is slated to release in March 2025.

Sony, in collaboration with Honda, has been working on an electric vehicle for five years now, and finally, at CES 2025, the car has a release date. Afeela 1 appeared a couple of years ago as a prototype (codenamed VISION-S) and now at the mega event the close-to-production-ready model has made its first appearance.

Sony Honda Mobility has also revealed that the electric sedan is up for pre-order for residents of California with a refundable reservation fee of $200 and a release date in mid-2026. The EV will come in two variants – Origin and Signature – priced at $89,000 and $102,900 respectively. It will come with a 91-kilowatt-hour battery promising a total range of 300 miles and capable of fast charging via the 150 kW DC socket. The main highlight is a three-year subscription to in-car features like LiDAR-assisted Level 2+ autonomy and AI-powered personal assistant. This makes it capable of self-parking by identifying empty spots in parking.

Designer: Sony Honda Mobility

Afeela 1 is dotted with a panorama of displays on the dashboard and built-in PlayStation 5 to get gaming when you are parked waiting for someone, having nothing to do. The car can be piloted using the PS5 Dual Sense controller and even voice command via the Afeela Personality Agent. The personal assistant can be interacted with from inside or even outside the car which is a great feature to go with semi-autonomy. At some point in the future, the user will be simply able to hop in the car and then command it to go to any destination. The expansive dashboard is powered by the Unreal Engine game engine to display the main interface as well as the maps and driver aid systems. Sony is using an Active Noise Cancellation setup to make the cabin go as quiet as it could be, even when the outside world is noisy as hell.

The four-seater sedan comes with a dual rear-seat entertainment system and matching futuristic interiors. Afeela 1 rides on 21-inch wheels and is all set to roll off the manufacturing lines next year in Tidal Gray, Calm White, and Core Black colorways for the exterior and interior.

Nubeo Watches is no stranger to launching timepieces with hints of space and intergalactic exploration. Just days ago, we witnessed the release of Nubeo’s Space Invaders Automatic Wristwatch, and now the watchmaker is boldly revisiting the Star Trek universe to add a touch of sci-fi to its new watch dial. With a legacy that spans over five decades and includes iconic starships like the USS Enterprise and legendary characters such as Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock, Star Trek has inspired generations with its vision of the future, with my favourites being the Leonard Nimoy version of Spock.

Dubbed the NB-6106 Magellan Automatic Star Trek Warp Speed Limited Edition, this wristwatch is a second partnership watch between the Nubeo and Star Trek franchise. After the Magellan Automatic Star Trek Starfleet launched in 2024, the latest release pays homage to the starships from the iconic sci-fi series with it’s rich tapestry of exploration and innovation,  creating the perfect backdrop for Nubeo’s latest timepiece, capturing the spirit of adventure that Star Trek fans have cherished since the original series first aired in 1966! Can everyone else hear the Star Trek theme playing in the heads?

Designer: Nubeo

The limited-edition Magellan Automatic Star Trek Warp Speed watch is unveiled in four striking colors, each inspired by the iconic Starfleet uniforms: Data yellow, Riker black, Troi blue, and Picard red. These hues are not just aesthetic choices; they cleverly embody the essence of warp speed, a cornerstone of Star Trek lore. This design language infuses the watch with a dynamic sense of movement and futuristic elegance, making it a true collector’s piece for fans.

To incorporate the idea of high-speed travel into its design, the watch features a custom 3D-molded dial that pays tribute to the legendary USS Enterprise, capturing the spirit of exploration and innovation. The Magellan Automatic Star Trek Warp Speed boasts a robust 48mm barrel-shaped stainless steel case, housing a reliable Japanese automatic movement. This ensures the watch remains precise and functional, even during the most intense intergalactic missions, making it an ideal companion for both Star Trek enthusiasts and watch collectors alike.

The watch is intricately detailed, featuring a 3D side view of the NCC-1701D starship, a nod to the iconic vessel from “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” engraved on its right side. This attention to detail extends to the case back, which showcases a blueprint-like design reminiscent of the technical schematics often seen in Starfleet operations. The watch boasts a water resistance of up to 5 ATM and is paired with a matching, durable rubber strap.

Limited to just 200 pieces per color variant, the Magellan Automatic Star Trek Warp Speed Limited Edition is available through Nubeo for $1,500 each, capturing the essence of Starfleet’s adventurous spirit. Live Long and Prosper this 2025 with this iconic watch as your trusty sidekick. Afterall, what a better way to face a new year than with some good old-fashioned heroes to inspire you everyday.

This smartphone case with a lanyard charging cable will never let your device run out of juice

]]>

Let’s face the fact that you can’t part from your phone unless you are a disciplined minimalist. While most phone users register around three to six hours of average screen time every day, avoiding mindless scrolling on your phone has become a rarity in modern times. While some employ the majority of this screen time for productive tasks, most of us out there are stuck in the vicious loop of going back and forth to social networking apps.

Anyway, all that screen time sucks your battery, and that makes carrying a charging cable something of a ritual. At times you tend to forget to keep the charging cable handy in your backpack, only to be left high and dry after all that phone usage. Now that can be scary when the battery is running out and you are expecting an important call from your client.

Designer:  Jinkyo Han

This cool concept wants to eliminate every chance of you forgetting the essential charging cable because now you don’t have to remember to carry one. Yes, the concept proposes a dual utility smartphone case with a lanyard that has a USB-C charging cable attached to it. The smart idea seems easy to implement for a phone accessory maker, and will surely have many takers. I know more than a couple of my colleagues who will fancy buying one as they are into the habit of forgetting their charging cables. Just that the cable doesn’t fly around hanging from the case, there is a small enclosure to plug in both ends for aesthetics and functional easiness.

The functionality extends beyond just protecting your device, or juicing up your smartphone though.
