At the ongoing CES 2025, Sony has launched the prototype of an extended reality headset dubbed XYN specifically for creating 3D spatial content. The Japanese consumer Electronics giant briefly previewed their motive to develop the headset at last year’s CES and now the wearable has got better with 4K OLED microdisplays and video passthrough tech.

XYN is a comprehensive software and hardware solution to support VR content creators to capture the precise details of the real-world environment and seamlessly integrate with an array of third-party tools for a flexible workflow. This makes complete sense as demand for mixed reality and virtual reality content is spiking. When not in use the wearer can flip the headset up since they’ll be using it for long durations while creating content. The only thing missing this year compared to last year’s version is the pointer and ring on top. At the event, the headset was spotted in two colorways – black and gray. The price and release date of the headset are still uncertain, and we hope to hear more from Sony in the coming months.

Alongside the XYN headset, Sony has also revealed the Xyn Motion Studio which is a Windows app with support for up to 12 Mocopi sensors for an improved motion capture flow. This is often used by video content creators to control virtual avatars courtesy of the wireless motion tracking system. The advanced software enables the developers to cut or merge motions, as well as toggle the time and position. A prototype of the spatial capture solution is now capable of converting any real objects or mirrorless camera photos into photorealistic 3D computer-generated assets. The software is slated to release in March 2025.

After all, they’re small and discreet, let you still wear your favorite timepiece, and should last you almost a week of battery life. You still get all the tracking benefits of a larger wearable, though some might cast doubts on the accuracy of heart rate and blood oxygen monitoring.

On the flip side, a smart ring’s simpler and smaller design means that it loses out on a few smart features, notably the ability to see information or be alerted to notifications. Some might actually consider this a benefit but others definitely won’t. As if to say it’s possible to have the best of both worlds, this “ultra-thin” smart ring boasts to be the first to bear its own tiny display, which sounds fascinating until you really think about it.

Unlike, say, the eccentric Casio ring watch that looks like a miniaturized wristwatch, the Rogbird SR08 Ultra’s display sits entirely within the confines of the ring’s body. That means it has an extremely tiny space for information, so text and numbers scroll in a pager-style tickler format, but you’ll still have to squint and patiently wait for the full information to pass by before you can get all the details.

That defeats the reason why even the most basic smart tracker has a display, letting wearers see important information at a quick glance. The small pixel density also makes it uncomfortable to read, straining your eyes more than necessary. The irony is that you will most likely always have your phone with you anyway, so it might be faster and easier to check the app on a larger screen.

Having a display also affects battery life, especially if there’s no clear mechanism for automatically turning it off and on with gestures. It makes one of a smart ring’s biggest benefits, which is longer battery life, pointless. In fact, with a distracting display that breaks the illusion of wearing an elegant piece of jewelry, you pretty much throw away everything that makes a smart ring appealing.

Fortunately, the Rogbid SR08 Ultra seems more like an outlier than a trailblazer, flaunting technical prowess rather than pushing the young market to maturity. It does look like it misses out on some important features, though the discounted $90 price tag looks almost too good to be true, and maybe it actually is.

The Zero Earbuds and Glasses concept, designed for SK Biopham are devices that epilepsy patients can wear and help monitor their seizures without interfering with their every day life. These products are discrete enough that they can blend seamlessly with their lifestyle and they are both ergonomic enough that they won’t interfere with their regular tasks.

The Zero Glasses can help relieve chronic anxiety that epileptic patients experience due to the unpredictable nature of seizures. They are able to measure things like brain activity, heart rhythm, and body motion, which are usually used as indicators for an incoming attack. There are magnetic connectors at the temple tips discretely placed on the glasses which lets it connect to the sensor pad. It also comes with a charging case with an angle-adjustable camera which can be used to record the patient when they’re experiencing a seizure.

Meanwhile, the ZERO Earbuds are another wearable tool that can also measure the same things. It is designed like regular over-ear wearables similar to hearing aids or just earbuds. The ear hooks are ergonomic and adjustable while the magnetic connectors foster an easy connection with the sensor pads. It is also discrete enough that the user will not be embarassed to wear them, similar to the glasses.

Augmented Reality (AR) glasses or Mixed Reality headset – as Apple chooses to call its AR/VR device – represent a leap forward in wearable technology which thrives on the possibility of endless expandability. The best thing about these devices is that they are controlled by gesture and voice-based interactions through onboard sensors and cameras.

Despite their promise, AR glasses remain a niche product, while smartphones, laptops, and game consoles still remain daily drivers. A South Korean designer believes unintuitive gestures and voice commands can be awkward in public settings and since the AR glasses lack physical controls, they are not finding wide adoption. As a solution, he has come up with Cylin, a cylindrical portable PC comprising AR glasses and a controller.

Currently, AR glasses’ interaction methods feel clunky, especially in a public setting or when you want to get some instant text written. To make the computing glasses a practical tool for all types of environments—whether enjoying videos sitting in a café or writing a column for a magazine in a shared public space. Sun-il Kim has designed Cylin, which functions like a scroll.

It has that slot for the glasses, a scroll-like opening keyboard interface for text input, and puts a mouse in there for precise control. Tying over a virtual keyboard or through gestures is cumbersome and adding a physical keyboard onboard would increase the weight and cost of the AR glasses. The Cylin is thus a handy solution that doesn’t take away the fun but adds required function making it convenient for everyday use in various environments.

As a compact PC in the shape of a small cylindrical body integrating a mouse, keyboard, and AR glasses, the Cylin may seem like a product too much. But given the problem it is trying to address; it may be a viable option. If it does get some heads like us interested, it can definitely start a product category of its own.
