Given how many hours a day and how many days a week people work in front of their desks, the need for comfortable and ergonomic chairs is more important today than ever. Although work-from-home arrangements have made it possible to pick your own chair, that isn’t true for offices that buy generic chairs in bulk to keep costs down. While almost all manufacturers promise comfort, not everyone defines that word the same way.

A chair with an ergonomic yet cost-effective design would be great, but it would be even better if people could customize it to their own comfort without breaking the bank. That’s the kind of office chair heaven that this concept tries to envision, and unsurprisingly, it uses a modular design to solve that kind of problem.

To some extent, the typical computer chair with four to five wheels and height-adjustable backrests already has the foundations of modularity. They’re often flat-packed and require some assembly, so it’s just one step away from adjusting that design to accommodate other parts. You just need the right connections to use.

FP, or “First-Party,” Chair concept design uses a rail system to make that not only possible but also easy. The seat and the backrest are the main modular parts that can be removed and replaced by any compatible design. It starts out with completely flat designs, but these can be swapped out for ones with cushions, curves, and armrests. Anything that can fit that rail system will do as long as it keeps the chair balanced.

The base is also replaceable, though the options are probably fewer. You have the typical caster for movability or a flat platform for stability. The latter can probably be screwed down as well, which might be necessary for some mass installation. There isn’t much wiggle room for differentiation here, especially since the need for stability is even greater.

The FP Chair doesn’t differ from those mass-produced office chairs in terms of packaging convenience or assembling complexity. There are also still some limits to what modular designs can be used, such as the balance of the chair and its stability. As with any modular system, it will also depend on just how many third-party designs take advantage of this feature, though given the need for personalization and customization, one can easily imagine how big that market could be.

Tucked away in Yangpo Village on top of the Gaoligong Mountains is a lovely bookstore called the Nujiang Grand Canyon Bookstore. The store beautifully merges contemporary architecture with the surrounding landscape – both natural and cultural. The bookstore is blessed with stunning views of the Nujiang River and the nearby peaks. This brilliant structure combines modern design with local heritage gracefully and respectfully.

Designer: TAO (Trace Architecture Office)

The bookstore is constructed on a mountainous site, and it extends outwards like a sharp arrow. This represents the Lisu people’s connection to crossbows. The structure seamlessly adapts to the slope, it beautifully integrates with the landscape, while forming a subtle sense of elevation. Reinforced concrete and locally sourced materials were used to build the bookstore, improving its durability, and reducing any adverse effects on the environment. The walls include openings that provide framed views of the canyon, allowing the interior and exterior to co-exist harmoniously.

The inside of the bookstore contains three levels. Each floor has a purpose and goal. The top story includes a café with a sloped roof, creating a free-flowing and open ambiance. The middle floor serves as the bookstore, equipped with concrete walls, while the lower level accommodates an amphitheater featuring skylights. The theater is equipped with camphor-wood doors which are opened once the day, allowing the surrounding landscape to connect with the theater.

The impressive bookstore functions as a communal space, where residents and visitors are welcomed warmly. It is a cultural hub where visitors can visit the terraces and different communal areas. Various elements of traditional Lisu architecture were incorporated into the bookstore, such as the sloped roofline, which pays respect to the Lisu culture. The terraces form open and panoramic spaces that allow the building to merge with the natural landscape. This marks a seamless transition from constructed spaces to the natural landscape of the Nujiang Canyon.

The main terrace is aligned with Yangpo Village’s road, which further instates the building as a communal extension. It allows the bookstore to serve as an architectural landmark and an important cultural hub. This thoughtful design allows public spaces to beautifully incorporate the local cultural heritage of a region.

Tiny House Listings recently unveiled a new towable dwelling called the Lad. It is perfect for those seeking low-budget downsizing options that are comfortable and cozy. The Lad features a practical and compact interior that can happily house two people. The Lad is an updated version of one of the firm’s previous models, and it is based on a double-axle trailer. It features a length of 20 feet and is the same size as most European tiny homes. The exterior includes painted metal and is topped off with a metal roof.

The interior of the house occupies around 160 square feet, and it features a finishing in ply. An open layout has been placed on one floor, with the entrance leading to a compact living area that includes a sofa and space for a TV. A storage unit has been integrated as well. The kitchen is closely located, and it isn’t fully featured.

But it does include a countertop, a sink and an electric stove, a fridge/freezer, and an area for appliances and extra storage. The bathroom is also placed nearby, and you can access it via a sliding door. It contains a flushing toilet, a shower, and a small sink.

The tiny home only includes one bedroom, and since it is on the ground floor, it includes plenty of headroom to stand upright. The bedroom includes a double bed with integrated storage, as well as a mini-split air-conditioner, which will heat and cool the entire home. Enough though the bedroom isn’t the largest, the fact that you can stand upright, unlike most bedrooms in other tiny homes is a plus point.

The Lad isn’t the best option if you’re looking for a spacious and roomy tiny home. But if you’re a couple or a small family, then the Lad could be a good fit for you. It includes all the basic amenities, as well as a sense of comfort and coziness that other modern homes often miss out on. Currently, the Lad is priced at US$47,500.

There’s that saying that all work and no play makes people dull, but work environments rarely encourage the two to mix in the same space. Even then, however, those would probably still be considered “work, and the line that divides work and play still exists.

But what if the very same office space could become your playground during lunch break? And what if you didn’t have to move the furniture out of the way to do that? That’s sort of the magic offered by this unique office furniture collection design by skaters for skaters, transforming an already dynamic open floor plan office into a field for exercise and play when you need to get the creative juices flowing again.

Traditional wisdom dictates that work life and personal life should be kept separate but balanced, but younger generations have found ways to blend the two together and still be productive. That’s easier when your passion and hobby are actually part of your work, like when you’re a couple of designers who happen to love skateboarding as well. Skate Break is the result of that convergence, transforming one space into another without breaking too much of a sweat.

Just like a hi-tech showroom or a sci-fi transforming room, Skate Break’s furniture stands as honest-to-goodness functional office equipment one moment and skate ramps the next. As long as you have ample room between these pieces of furniture, you don’t even have to move them out of the way and bring them back in after you’re done. It’s not instantaneous, of course, but it sure beats having to constantly move things around whenever you want to switch from one mode to another.

There’s definitely some ingenious design involved, like a boardroom table that can be taken apart to become a pyramid ramp and a grind ledge. The standing desk uses a lever system to reveal a hidden ramp on which to skate. Don’t worry, the large computer screen is protected by transparent plexiglass, so you can confidently skate up and down over it.

The oversized Lamp Ramp is probably one of the more striking pieces, composed of what looks like a gigantic flower-shaped fanning shade and an arched stand. When a pin and the counterweight dumbbell are removed, the shade moves down until it touches the floor, creating a small volcano ramp and rainbow rail.

Skating inside the office might not be the smartest decision, especially if you don’t have protective gear available. It’s still a fun idea to turn an office into a playground and back again, seamlessly shifting gears as the need or desire arises. And as many companies with high creative output have proven, such a lifestyle can actually be beneficial to both employees and employers, as long as they don’t get into accidents.

Canada-based Rover Tiny Homes’ latest Cypress model was downsized quite interestingly. It isn’t mounted on a trailer, which makes it not very portable, but quite spacious with a roomy interior that is apt for a family. The Cypress is intended to be installed on permanent foundations, so it isn’t a towable option if you’re seeking one. It features a length of 44 feet, making it one of the bigger models on the market, and a width of 12 feet.

The home features a finishing in metal siding paired with cedar trim and generous glazing, which allows the interior to fill with natural light. You can enter the living room through double glass doors. The living room is spacious and open and features a tongue-and-groove pine ceiling. It also includes some trim made from 100-year-old reclaimed barn wood, a sofa, chairs, and small tables. The kitchen is closely located, including a breakfast bar for three people, an oven with a four-burner stove, a microwave, a dishwasher, cabinetry, and a sink. A second entrance is included in the kitchen as well.

The bathroom is located near the kitchen, and it includes a bathtub/shower, which isn’t usually seen in most tiny homes. It also hosts a vanity sink, a flushing toilet, a stacked washing machine, and a dryer as well. The tiny home is equipped with one downstairs bedroom, which has plenty of headroom to stand upright.

There are stairs located next to the bathroom which offer access to another bedroom. Even though the bedroom is upstairs, it has ample amount of headroom to stand straight. There is another bedroom on the upper story, but like most tiny home bedrooms, this one has a low ceiling. This tiny home is relatively spacious, truly testing the boundaries of what a micro-home is. It is larger than most tiny homes on the market, but it serves as a comfortable and excellent option for larger families who may not be able to fit in the truly tiny houses. The Cypress is priced at US$143,000.

European tiny homes may not be as large and extravagant as their North American counterparts, but they do tend to be more detailed and impressive. Since the towing laws in Europe are stricter, they tend to be more compact and lightweight. Designed by Baluchon, Leïla’s Tiny House is a comfortable and cozy home featuring a length of 20 feet. It is a lovely light-filled space that is ideal for two people.

The tiny home is based on a double-axle trailer and features a finishing in red cedar, topped with a metal roof. It has a compact size, amped with generous glazing. The interior of the home is finished in spruce, and hints of Moroccan-inspired color have been added to the home, integrating an interesting vibe. The inside feels warm and inviting. The vibrant colors create an environment that also feels lively, forming a positive aura.

The home features one entrance that leads you to the kitchen. It is quite spacious for a tiny French home, with a simple yet well-equipped interior. The home includes an oven, a two-burner propane-powered stove, a sink, a small fridge and freezer, cabinetry, and a breakfast bar for two. The living room is closely located, and it includes a large window as well as a small wood-burning stove for warmth. A big daybed with integrated storage is included as well, and it can be used as a sofa and guest bed.

The opposite end of the house hosts the bathroom. It can be accessed through a sliding door, and it is equipped with a toilet and shower, but no sink. This isn’t hygienic and is pretty inconvenient if we’re honest. Residents will have to wash their hands in the kitchen. The home only includes one bedroom, and it can be accessed by a wooden ladder. The bedroom is like most bedrooms found in tiny homes, with a low ceiling, a double bed, and shelving. Leïla’s Tiny Home is priced at US$90,000.

OODA recently unveiled the Hora Verticale in Tirana, Albania, and they are back with another banger – Ndarja. Ndarja is a square, high-rise building that will be located in central Tirana. It measures around 355,000 sq ft and will span over 22 floors. The word Ndarja roughly translates to split or separation in Albanian, which does the building justice, since it will be pulled apart to create two visually intriguing towers.

One tower will accommodate office spaces on the lower floors and luxurious residences on the upper floors. The second tower will contain a retail space downstairs and a hotel on the upper stories.

The exterior is quite fascinating, and it will be covered with different plants and trees. The vegetation selected will be tough enough to handle the wind and sunlight while offering shade to the residents. The exterior will also include perforated metal sheeting to regulate the sunlight. The ground level will host a square with a reflective pool and more greenery. This space will be integrated between both towers.

“A transparent water mirror serves as a portal at its core, drawing natural light underground and linking the exterior to the interior,” said OODA. “This open area integrates the greenery from the surrounding streets, the square, and the balcony gardens, creating a pleasant microclimate for the neighborhood. The square, no longer just a passageway, becomes a true urban oasis.”

The facade is earthy-toned, allowing the structure to blend seamlessly with the city. The metal sheets reflect the balconies into the city, thereby mirroring the urban environment and creating an interaction that binds the inside and the surroundings. This forms a harmonious connection between the interior environment and the urban environment.

The incredible project is currently in the licensing phase, and Ndarja is expected to be constructed in 2029. This impressive project is a part of a large construction effort in Tirana which includes multiple other impressive buildings such as the Bond Tower and Klan TV HQ by OODA, and other structures by BIG and MVRDV.
