Designed and created by Vivien Roussel, Madalina Nicolae, and Marc Teyssier; BioHybrid Device video game controller is a combination of biological growth and digital fabrication. It is (according to the designers) grown using a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY). It is then integrated with sensors and electronic components – during the natural growth process – to create a real device you can play with. How cool is that?

The idea of the project kicked off with the question; “what if we could biologically grow interactive devices?” To achieve the proposed outcome, designers have fused electronic components into living organisms to produce interactive biohybrid devices. This provides us with an idea of a future where we can have natural devices that can develop, evolve, and eventually biodegrade at the end of life. We would still need ways to dispose of the electronics: maybe someone is thinking of fabricating them biologically as well.

The base biomaterial produced by the symbiosis of bacteria and yeast is a bacterial cellulose traditionally used for the creation of sustainable leather-like artifacts. Designers have leveraged this and used morphogenesis for embedding it with electronic components of a traditional controller to make this BioHybrid Device video game controller.

These biologically grown devices blur the boundaries between living and non-living systems, in the process opening up possibilities to create interactive devices through biological and digital fabrication for many other applications such as robotics, medical devices, and wearables, in addition to the proposed usage in gaming. While most of it looks impressive, such devices would entail a complex fabrication process and require more maintenance to remain functional for a longer time.

Why do flash drives and portable SSDs always come in three shades of black and white? They do carry a certain professional aura to their appearance, but just like our smartphones, they don’t always reflect our personalities and inclinations. Sony, in collaboration with Honda, has been working on an electric vehicle for five years now, and finally, at CES 2025, the car has a release date. Afeela 1 appeared a couple of years ago as a prototype (codenamed VISION-S) and now at the mega event the close-to-production-ready model has made its first appearance.

Sony Honda Mobility has also revealed that the electric sedan is up for pre-order for residents of California with a refundable reservation fee of $200 and a release date in mid-2026. The EV will come in two variants – Origin and Signature – priced at $89,000 and $102,900 respectively. It will come with a 91-kilowatt-hour battery promising a total range of 300 miles and capable of fast charging via the 150 kW DC socket. The main highlight is a three-year subscription to in-car features like LiDAR-assisted Level 2+ autonomy and AI-powered personal assistant. This makes it capable of self-parking by identifying empty spots in parking.

Afeela 1 is dotted with a panorama of displays on the dashboard and built-in PlayStation 5 to get gaming when you are parked waiting for someone, having nothing to do. The car can be piloted using the PS5 Dual Sense controller and even voice command via the Afeela Personality Agent. The personal assistant can be interacted with from inside or even outside the car which is a great feature to go with semi-autonomy. At some point in the future, the user will be simply able to hop in the car and then command it to go to any destination. The expansive dashboard is powered by the Unreal Engine game engine to display the main interface as well as the maps and driver aid systems. Sony is using an Active Noise Cancellation setup to make the cabin go as quiet as it could be, even when the outside world is noisy as hell.

The four-seater sedan comes with a dual rear-seat entertainment system and matching futuristic interiors. Afeela 1 rides on 21-inch wheels and is all set to roll off the manufacturing lines next year in Tidal Gray, Calm White, and Core Black colorways for the exterior and interior.

Acer Nitro Blaze 8 and 11 Handheld Gaming Devices

With an AMD Ryzen 7 8840HS, 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM, and Radeon 780M graphics, the new Nitro Blaze handhelds are capable of handling many demanding games and applications without tying gamers down to a single spot. The fast 144Hz WQXGA displays, paired with Radeon Super Resolution and AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution technologies, deliver crisp graphics and vibrant visuals even with a lower resolution setting. Its adjustable design can also accommodate screen sizes of up to 8.3 inches, which covers most foldable phones as well. The USB-C port provides a reliable connection and 18W pass-through fast charging promises worry-free extended gameplay. The Acer Nitro Mobile Controller goes on sale this quarter for $69.99.

In 1978, Space Invaders launched an arcade revolution that would forever change entertainment. Today, Nubeo’s collaboration with TAITO transforms that digital legacy into a sophisticated timepiece that speaks volumes about how cultural touchstones evolve. Having handled many gaming-inspired watches over the years, I can say this limited edition collection – particularly the Plasma Pink variant – stands out for its thoughtful execution and genuine horological merit.

Dive beneath the crystal, and you’ll discover a mechanical theater performing an endless show. The dial is an engineering feat of layered brilliance – each element floating above the next like alien spacecraft in formation. The outermost ring commands the hours, while a ghostly semi-transparent plate hovers mysteriously below. Further down, a minutes disc keeps its steady orbit, all circling around the star of the show: a seconds disc featuring that infamous squid invader, forever poised to unleash its pixelated assault.

There’s something deeply poetic about choosing the squid invader – or “Ika” as it’s known in Japanese – as the timepiece’s central character. Veterans of the original game will remember this pint-sized menace, with its triangular head and quartet of tentacles, as the most challenging target to hit. Now, instead of dodging player fire, it perpetually circles the dial in a mesmerizing dance of nostalgia and precision engineering.

The watch comes in four color-ways, limited to 125 units each. Shown here is the Plasma Pink (which is the only one that isn’t sold out), but you also have Solar Yellow, Galaxy Green, and Invader Indigo – all neon colors that really capture the vibrant 8-bit visual tapestry that was this game. The straps are made from silicone, and blend right into the watch’s body, creating a smooth appearance that sort of contrasts against the jagged pixelated forms of the characters in the game.

From a technical standpoint, the engineering achievements here are significant. Creating a multi-layered dial while maintaining reliable timekeeping requires precise calculations and exceptional manufacturing tolerance. Each layer must be perfectly weighted and balanced to prevent interference with the movement below. The semi-transparent elements add another layer of complexity, requiring special materials that maintain structural integrity while allowing light to pass through. On top, a domed mineral lens almost mimics the feeling of a CRT display, which was the dominant display technology during the time!

The ‘Ika’ and numerals are all luminous, although they don’t glow in the same neon colors as their original paint-job.

The decision to limit each colorway to 125 pieces reflects an understanding of both collector culture and market dynamics. It’s enough to make the watch accessible to serious enthusiasts while maintaining exclusivity. This number also allows for proper quality control – crucial for a design with such complex construction. That exclusivity is also paired with the fact that the watches are currently available for a heavily discounted price of just $200. I’d grab one instantly if I were you!

The watch exemplifies how digital culture can be transformed into mechanical art. Every element serves both aesthetic and functional purposes, from the layered construction that creates depth to the precise positioning of gaming elements that enhance rather than impede timekeeping. Handheld gaming PCs are obviously powerful enough to play AAA games, at least with settings tuned down a bit, so they’d theoretically be powerful enough to drive other regular software unrelated to gaming. Even the Steam Deck with its rather aged hardware is more than capable of serving as a mini PC, whether you’re running Linux or even Windows. Of course, the problem is that these designs are meant to be held in your hands, making them harder to use as a regular computer.

You could, of course, connect peripherals to the gaming handheld, like an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse. That works when you’re at home or in the office, but not so much when on the go. This chunky-looking 3D printed case for the Steam Deck tries to offer a rather creative solution to the problem by having space for a keyboard, effectively turning the portable gaming computer into a tiny laptop in a snap, just in case you need a more productive use for the powerful handheld PC.

Carrying around a Bluetooth keyboard and a mouse isn’t exactly too much of an inconvenience, but using them without a desk is next to impossible. This 3D printed case solve that problem by having a Logitech Pebble Keys 2 keyboard and the Steam Deck as a single unit, though the narrow kickstand might still be a problem when it comes to placing the tiny laptop on your lap. You also still have to make do with a 7.4-inch screen, which is a bit usable but not exactly comfortable or ergonomic.

Of course, this doesn’t stop you from using the Steam Deck as a gaming handheld. You just need to pop it out of the hardshell case to be able to hold it in your hands again. But for games you prefer to play with a keyboard and a mouse, this laptop-like configuration will be more to your liking. Yes, you might want to use a mouse for that purpose, but the Steam Deck’s trackpads might be fine when you don’t have a table to play on. The case has cutouts for the Steam Deck’s ports so you have access to them even while the device is in the case.

As for that mouse, there’s also a 3D-printed “backpack” for the case that can hold that peripheral as well as charging brick, further transforming the Steam Deck into a portable workstation. Another add-on is a 3D printed carrying handle that really drives home that portability image. You’re doing to look rather odd when using it as a laptop, but very few people will be able to brag about having such a portable gaming computer anyway.

The STL files for 3D printing the case are being sold for around $9.50, unlike the usual free handouts that other designers give. That’s still rather cheap compared to buying a Steam Deck carrying case that doesn’t have space for a keyboard at all, but only if you have access to a 3D printer. Otherwise, the costs do add up, but you probably won’t see such a custom-made case for a Steam Deck laptop in the market anyway.

Dubbed TRONTENDO (an amalgam of Tron and Nintendo) the e-bike has built-in interactive elements including gamified riding mechanics and charge level indicators adapted from game HUDs. In particular, the Nintendo’s retro and current line-up of titles. Evgeniy sees every bike rider as the hero of their digital universe, and the bike is a projection of that sentiment with an appealing retro-futuristic vibe. It is a peppy creation that bridges the gap between the past, present, and the future. More than that, the electric bike reflects the commitment towards minimalism, functionality, and emotional engagement. To its core, the unique motorcycle design is a visually appealing synergy between the digital aesthetics of the Tron bike and the playful innovation of Nintendo.

The clean lines, sharp contours, and bold color blocks are the true emulation of the retro Nintendo consoles in their glorious evolution. Combine those eye-popping pixelated graphics with the sleek, modern form of a two-wheeler that the young generation would fancy as their mode of expression, is guaranteed to grab attention. The designer has mixed the visual elements of the Nintendo color themes with the digital display, HUD and vital indicator elements. Imagine riding this thing to your daily commute (especially in the dark hours) with all the gamified elements coming to life. On-lookers would give this thing more than just a glance!

There is still some debate about the benefits of curved screens at home, whether they can really replicate the cinematic experience of movie houses or are just marketing hype. There’s also the promise of a more ergonomic display because of how they conform to the natural angle of our vision. Some people swear by curved screens, especially when it comes to more immersive content like movies and video games, but not everyone is a believer.

With many brands seemingly falling head over heels with curves, there seem to be fewer choices for flat-screeners. Even worse, you’re forced to make an upfront decision when making a purchase, without the option to change your mind later at no cost. If we already have phones that can fold in half, it shouldn’t be a huge leap to have monitors that can change their shape on a whim, which is exactly what LG is bringing to gamers’ desks in glorious 5K2K resolution.

There are benefits and disadvantages to both curved and flat monitors, but people’s preferences can change every now and then. While movies and games might look great on a curved screen, regular applications and windows might look distorted. Content creation software that relies on accuracy and precision doesn’t benefit from such technology either, but there’s no way users can switch between the two modes unless they have different displays for different needs.

The upcoming LG UltraGear OLED Bendable Gaming Monitor (model 45GX990A) promises the flexibility to adjust to your needs without wasting money on extra equipment you might use only occasionally. The 45-inch monitor can go from flat to a 900R curvature in just a few seconds, making it possible to seamlessly switch between use cases in a snap. LG also promotes the monitor’s ability to quickly switch between resolution and refresh rate presets in order to match your needs.

To be clear, this is not the world’s first bendable monitor, but it is the first one to come with a very high 5K2K (5,120 x 2,160) resolution. The monitor’s 21:9 ultra-wide aspect ratio is also a boon to gamers who usually need more screen real estate at the sides than a taller canvas. That said, the monitor does feature a Dual-Mode function that lets you switch between 21:9 and 16:9 aspect ratios as well as different picture sizes for compatibility with different types of content.

LG is also announcing two other curved monitors that don’t change their shape for those ready to go all in on that kind of display. The 45-inch UltraGear 45GX950A boasts a more pronounced 800R curvature while the 39-inch UltraGear 39GX90SA offers a slightly more compact size, both with wide 21:9 aspect ratios. All three monitors come with LG’s WOLED (White OLED with color filters) technology for even better color reproduction that both gamers and creators demand. Availability of these new curved LG monitors has yet to be announced, but they will be showcased at CES 2025 next year.
