After all, they’re small and discreet, let you still wear your favorite timepiece, and should last you almost a week of battery life. You still get all the tracking benefits of a larger wearable, though some might cast doubts on the accuracy of heart rate and blood oxygen monitoring.

On the flip side, a smart ring’s simpler and smaller design means that it loses out on a few smart features, notably the ability to see information or be alerted to notifications. Some might actually consider this a benefit but others definitely won’t. As if to say it’s possible to have the best of both worlds, this “ultra-thin” smart ring boasts to be the first to bear its own tiny display, which sounds fascinating until you really think about it.

Unlike, say, the eccentric Casio ring watch that looks like a miniaturized wristwatch, the Rogbird SR08 Ultra’s display sits entirely within the confines of the ring’s body. That means it has an extremely tiny space for information, so text and numbers scroll in a pager-style tickler format, but you’ll still have to squint and patiently wait for the full information to pass by before you can get all the details.

That defeats the reason why even the most basic smart tracker has a display, letting wearers see important information at a quick glance. The small pixel density also makes it uncomfortable to read, straining your eyes more than necessary. The irony is that you will most likely always have your phone with you anyway, so it might be faster and easier to check the app on a larger screen.

Having a display also affects battery life, especially if there’s no clear mechanism for automatically turning it off and on with gestures. It makes one of a smart ring’s biggest benefits, which is longer battery life, pointless. In fact, with a distracting display that breaks the illusion of wearing an elegant piece of jewelry, you pretty much throw away everything that makes a smart ring appealing.

Fortunately, the Rogbid SR08 Ultra seems more like an outlier than a trailblazer, flaunting technical prowess rather than pushing the young market to maturity. It does look like it misses out on some important features, though the discounted $90 price tag looks almost too good to be true, and maybe it actually is.

Of course health should be a priority but I sometimes wish there was an easier way to regularly check how I’m doing without all the hassle of setting up an appointment, taking a leave from work, and going through all kinds of tests.

Withings has come up with a concept for something that can give you “deep health screening” in case you can’t go to the doctor at the moment. Omnia is still a conceptual product for now but it is an exciting development that they’re working on. It looks at the future of personal health monitoring, kind of like what we imagine when watching sci-fi movies and TV shows.

The concept is that of a full-length mirror with a scale at the bottom that should be able to give you 360-deep health screening. It is able to check things like ECG, heart rate, other heart health specs, activity tracking, vitamin analysis, muscle-to-fat ration, weight trends, and even sleep quality analysis. All you have to do is step on the scale with the frequency you want, and it should be able to give you in-depth data on your health. And it comes with an AI that will talk back to you and tell you all about what’s wrong with your health and your body.

Of course, you would need to have connected Withings devices like watches, body scan, and BPM Connect, and 3rd party sources so the device can give you more detailed readings. This concept was tailor-fit for the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas so we may see some proof of concept there to get more details about how it will work exactly.

When it’s that time of the month or when I’m just so stressed (which can also be both at the same time), one of my constant wishes is to get a massage. But of course, it’s not the best time to have one especially if you’re experiencing dysmenorrhea. A comfortable, relaxing massage would be pretty helpful during those times, even if it’s not an actual, proper massage.

The AM1 massager is an abdominal massager that is meant to be more comfortable rather than just functional. In fact, it was designed to be somehow part of the furniture, like you would leave a cushion lying around on your couch or on your bed. And when you’re using it, it is meant to be like you’re hugging a cushion to your tummy and you’re being massaged at the same time.

It can also look like a VR headset except that it will be wrapped around your abdomen rather than your head. It follows the body line with smooth silhouette. It has a fabric in the front which brings the comfortable feeling even as the vibration of the massage feature of the device is shaking you up.

There isn”t other information about this massager, like what features it may have and also other specifications. But as it is, and because of my aforementioned issues during certain times of the month, it’s something I might want to own someday especially if it is as comfortable and destressing as it promises.

Not all combinations make sense, though, but it might just be a matter of making an appealing composition or selling the idea.

This odd yet pleasing concept design, for example, might look like a decorative object, but it is actually a handheld vacuum cleaner in disguise. Actually, it’s a discreet mood lamp to adorn your desk and create the ambiance you want. Actually, it can also be a makeshift Ikebana vase that holds a single, delicate flower stem. Actually, it’s all three, and it pulls off this rather unusual mishmash of functions without losing sight of its true purpose: bringing value to the owner’s life even in such a small space.

A vacuum cleaner is not something you’d immediately associate with having an aesthetic charm, yet the Budding design concept really tries to bridge those two incongruent ideas using some nature-inspired explorations. Like a sprout that curves as it grows, this design object also curls and rises from its base in an elegant and smooth manner. That alone gives it some decorative value, but its worth extends to its practical uses.

That vertical part of the tube is supposed to be a handheld vacuum cleaner, not unlike those rather basic and cheap simulacra you’d see in online shops. This hides such a technical and utilitarian product in plain sight, though how obvious it is as a vacuum cleaner will probably depend on how well you’ll be able to clean it after each use. The concept is also designed to make it easy to take the cylindrical vacuum cleaner apart to replace its filter when needed.

The base of the object serves as a fixed front-facing mood light, whose gentle glow is supposed to, well, set the mood. It’s not strong enough to provide any kind of serious illumination, nor is its low angle conducive for that purpose. The design doesn’t indicate if the light’s hue or intensity can be changed, as some people might not always appreciate a warm yellowish glow.

Although it’s not a formal vase of any sort, Budding’s curved form makes it possible to prop up a single flower stem to some artistic effect. It’s a fitting image to the design’s sprout metaphor, though its minimalist aesthetic does limit the kind of flowers that go perfectly with it. Even without this aspect, however, having two functions hiding inside a decorative object is more than enough to endear it to people living in small spaces with simpler needs and simple tastes.

One of the biggest use case proposals for home robots, at least next to cleaning floors, is the care of older members of the family. Whether it’s reminding them of their medication or delivering the newspaper to their side, these rolling robots are imagined to give much-needed assistance to less ambulant members of the household. But while that’s definitely a necessity, it makes the generalization that older people at home are all stuck to their seats most of the day.

Many senior citizens, especially those who are just starting their retirement stage, don’t have such needs yet. They’re still able to move on their own and even prefer a bit of independence while they can still physically enjoy it. More often than not, what they do need is some form of companionship, not necessarily from people, and this robot pet concept tries to deliver that kind of emotional support that impersonal “delivery” robots might not be able to.

Of course, those robots for seniors being advertised by some companies try to have a friendly face that can theoretically appeal to these people, but the emotional connection ends there. It’s the same as having a courier simply delivering your items with a smile. For older people who can simply walk over to the counter on their own, it doesn’t add much value to their lives.

Careby is more like an emotional support pet than a personal caregiver, designed to offer the kind of companionship older people now seek from flesh and blood animals. Without the hassle of feeding and cleaning, of course. It looks like a cross between a cat and some quadruped critter, except it has wheels for feet instead. And, of course, it’s supposed to be AI-driven so that it can intelligently respond to voice prompts or react to your facial expressions.

What’s a little interesting is that Careby is not supposed to be an obedient robot by design. It will sometimes refuse to obey commands or display a stubborn streak, mimicking the behavior of real-life pets or even children. To some extent, it tries to create a more spontaneous and believable relationship, though it’s walking on a slipper slope as older people tend to be less patient as years go by.

Because we naturally see things in front of us first, we often treat vision as the most important sense, often at the expense of others. We usually take our sense of hearing for granted even when our ears have played a part in our survival. Our sense of hearing can help us focus or distract us in ways that aren’t as obvious as visual stimuli, which is how the whole “white noise” fad grew.

In the same sense (no pun intended), we subconsciously develop memories based on the sounds we hear in the background, though not always in a good way. Noise pollution can sometimes overwhelm us, forcing us to tune out sounds at the risk of becoming disconnected from the present moment. This beautiful turntable-like device reclaims that lost experience by turning recorded sounds around us into an enchanting hum of a bell.

This speculative object is practically a slowly spinning meditation bowl bell mounted on a wall. That alone already gives it some decorative value, but its operation holds even deeper meaning. Every piece of the Sonic Heirloom has significance and a reference to the way sounds shape our memories. There is a puck, for example, whose purpose is to record the sounds happening around you as you go through your day and then place it inside the player using a frosted glass vitrine that symbolizes how hazy our memories can sometimes become.

Playing back the recording starts to spin the bowl-shaped bell like a turntable, brushing against a leather-covered player that acts like a record player arm. The bowl itself is made from reused tin and copper, bringing their own memories from their past uses while also creating tonal qualities that are as unique as our memories. The bowl will also develop a unique patina over time, creating fresh new memories of its own.

As the bowl turns and creates friction with the player, a resonating sound is produced, not unlike the meditative hum that this kind of bell is known for. It puts a unique spin on our subconscious memories as recorded both by our ears and the puck, turning them into an opportunity to practice mindfulness and maybe recall the delightful events of the day.
