Loft-style bedrooms are common in tiny homes, but no one likes crawling into one and uncomfortably adjusting themselves there. Named the Sandy Tiny Home, this one-of-a-kind house attempts to deal with this issue by offering standing room in all three bedrooms. Designed by Indigo River Tiny Homes, the home is based on a triple-axle trailer, with a length of 36 feet. It features a finish of smart-engineered wood and two storage boxes on the outside.

Designer:  Indigo River Tiny Homes

As you enter the home, you are welcomed by the living area which includes a sofa for two, some storage space, and a TV. The kitchen is closely located, it contains solid mahogany countertops with a steel sink, a microwave, an electric oven with an electric cooktop, and a fridge/freezer. The kitchen also accommodates loads of cabinetry and a pull-out pantry. The bathroom is located next to the kitchen, and it is quite spacious with a washer/dryer hookup, a flushing toilet, a vanity sink, and a shower/bath unit which isn’t very common in tiny homes.

The master bedroom is located on the upper level of the home and can be accessed via a cleverly designed staircase that integrates storage solutions, maximizing functionality in a compact space. This staircase not only offers access to the bedroom but also provides valuable storage compartments for household items, ensuring an organized and clutter-free environment. The master bedroom showcases a unique architectural feature – a lowered L-shaped floor area.

This design innovation offers the room an impressive headroom of approximately 6.4 feet (1.95 meters), allowing occupants to stand comfortably upright—a rarity in many loft-style bedrooms. It also includes a queen-sized raised bed platform. This elevated sleeping area not only offers a cozy retreat but also enhances the room’s spatial dynamics.

The second upstairs bedroom is similarly designed with accessibility and comfort in mind. It can be accessed via a short set of steps and features a lowered-standing platform, much like the master bedroom. The standing headroom in all the bedrooms allows the residents to stand upright with ease, ensuring the space is more livable and comfortable. The third bedroom is located on the ground-floor, although the owner uses it as a home office space. The room is pretty small and compact for a downstairs bedroom, but it can accommodate a double bed. The house is a part of Indigo River Tiny Homes’ Bunkhouse range and is priced at around US$161,000.

The intricate carvings of Indian temple architecture might feel like something you’d only see in ancient ruins or history books. But in a gallery tucked away in Kolkata, those centuries-old designs take on a fresh, modern form. Here, sculptural walls bring these traditional patterns to life, blending them with sleek, contemporary furniture. It’s not just a space for looking; it’s one that feels alive, inviting you to experience a mix of the old and the new in a way that feels surprisingly natural.

What’s striking is the way these walls interact with their surroundings. Ceiling lights, placed with precision, create a play of light and shadow, emphasizing the intricate details and lending the room a dynamic, ever-changing personality. The carved motifs aren’t just decorative—they become part of the atmosphere, inviting visitors to not just look, but to feel the depth of the space. The furniture, sleek and unmistakably Italian, stands in stark yet harmonious contrast, bridging the traditional and the modern without missing a beat.

Designer: Abin Design Studio

The gallery’s design draws inspiration from the elaborate ornamentation found in India’s historic temples—intricacies that often tell stories of gods, folklore, and the passage of time. But here, these stories take on a modern interpretation. Instead of religious depictions, the patterns abstractly convey rhythm, symmetry, and movement. This reinterpretation ensures the space remains rooted in tradition while being unmistakably contemporary. It’s a delicate balance to strike, and Abin Design Studio pulls it off with both flair and restraint.

Walking through the gallery, it becomes evident that this is beyond your standard aesthetics. The walls are part of a narrative that subtly asks visitors to reflect on the importance of cultural heritage in modern design. The choice of Plaster of Paris isn’t arbitrary either. Its softness allows for easy customization while offering a texture that captures the subtle imperfections and organic feel of handcrafted art—qualities that perfectly echo the essence of ancient temple sculptures.

The gallery’s design approach speaks to a larger movement in architecture and interiors: the seamless blending of cultural heritage with contemporary sensibilities. This isn’t about nostalgia; it’s about evolution. By reimagining traditional temple detailing in a space dedicated to modern living, the gallery repositions these timeless motifs as relevant, even essential, in today’s design vocabulary. It’s a reminder that great design is rarely about choosing between old and new; it’s about finding ways for them to coexist and enrich each other.

Yet, what truly sets this gallery apart is its ability to spark conversation. You can almost hear visitors pondering how the walls were made, why specific patterns were chosen, and what the interplay of light and shadow means to them personally. It’s rare for a space to achieve this level of engagement, especially one focused on something as practical as furniture. And yet, by anchoring the design in an architectural style with centuries of history, the gallery transforms itself from a showroom into a space of exploration.

French architect Philippe Starck recently designed a red cube to accommodate the LA Almazara olive mill museum and restaurant in Andalusia. It has been adorned with symbols connecting to the region’s heritage. The building is surrounded by groves on a 25-hectare estate near Rona and was created for oil producer LA Organic as an initiative to boost oleo tourism – tourism based on olive oil production. The building is decorated with huge symbols that celebrate the “magic and poetry” of the area. It includes a bull’s horn in Corten steel and a carved eye symbolizing the area’s connection with the surrealist movement.

Designer: Philippe Starck

“LA Almazara itself is surrounded by acres of olive groves, bathed in powerful and warm lights of Andalusia. This gives a sense of the radicality I had to come up with for the project. Everything had to be out of the ordinary, out-of-scale, a little strange, and surrealist. The place is full of fertile surprises that reflect Andalusian symbols,” said Starck. “On the outside, it is a huge monolithic red block, as if fallen from the sky,” added Starck. “An enormous eye at the facade illustrates the vigilance of the great Andalusian surrealist artists, the smoke that emanates from it is surrealist and reflects mystery.”

The interior of the building is intended to be an “inhabitable work of art”. It includes a restaurant area which is placed under a suspended metal pipe and funnel that reference the production of oil, and a wing-like form which symbolizes the Andalusian scientist that was supposed to be the first human to fly.

The space includes a small seating area placed around a fireplace. The fireplace is situated below an oversized bullfighting sword that leans against the wall. This leads to a terrace that cantilevers from the building and seems to be supported by huge metal chains. It offers views of the surrounding landscape, creating an intriguing contrast against the building’s dark interior. The building contains other two floors as well which hold a museum space and facilities of the production of extra virgin olive oil. It is also surrounded by walking trails on the outside, as well as sculptures by Starck and some other visitor facilities.

“As soon as you enter, you are struck by the contrast in lights. In the building, it is dark and cool, to respect and enhance the delicate process of olive oil production,” said Starck. “Yet the inside shadows hold strong symbols as well, such as monumental half-olive embedded in the rusty steel wall, a metal pipe penetrating the building without ever coming out,” he concluded.

Designed by the architectural studio Clemens Kirsch, this lovely house in the Viennese hills is called the Villa Minimale. The home is a remarkable and impressive structure, designed for a family of four. It is a wooden retreat that efficiently utilizes space, creating a peaceful sanctuary for relaxation, socialization, and the love of gardening. The home serves as a calming oasis, a space that nurtures familial connections, allowing family members and friends to interact and engage with one another in a peaceful atmosphere.

Designer: Clemens Kirsch Architektur

The home occupies a maximum floor area of 35 sqm and a height limit of 5 meters, constrained by strict building regulations. The architects are inspired by the iconic Villa Rotonda and the Kings Road House. The end result is a home that feels timeless and contemporary, creating a mesmerizing effect. In a world where modern homes with no personality seem to reign supreme, the evergreen and subtle Villa Minimale is a welcomed escape. It serves as a heartwarming and serene space with charm and passion amidst the tsunami of cold and drab homes that seem to have taken over.

The ground floor of the Villa Minimale includes a central dining area, a well-equipped kitchen, a bathroom, a WC, and a cozy alcove. The upper level includes three bunks, which mimics the experience of “camping”, allowing the residents to admire the sky from the vantage point. The home was constructed using prefabricated timber elements, while the exterior features light-glazed timber battens and a copper roof.

The interior is a warm and inviting space, on account of the use of veneered marine pine blackboards. A copper roof crowns this timber structure. Inside, the combination of soft-toned furniture and paint creates a serene atmosphere. Large square and oval windows and doors allow fresh air and natural light to fill the space. At the heart of Villa Minimale’s design is a cozy alcove that serves as a striking focal point.

Villa Minimale is made up of four identical wooden boxes with shed roofs, that have been arranged in a windmill-like configuration, placed around a central oculus. The circular air space in the center offers natural ventilation, while also maintaining a connection to the surrounding landscape.

The home beautifully blurs the boundaries between the interior and the exterior. It seamlessly merges with the surrounding landscape, offering access to lovely views from all directions. Nature and architecture harmoniously play with one another to create a living experience that feels free-flowing, unique, and inspired.

Concrete doesn’t usually conjure up thoughts of artistry or adaptability—it’s solid, gray, and static. But Amorphous Concrete flips that notion on its head, proving that even the sturdiest materials can grow and evolve. This award-winning project merges high-tech algorithms with timeless materials, creating a system that’s as much about beauty as it is about practicality.

Amorphous Concrete utilizes a “Differential Growth” algorithm – a process that mimics the organic growth patterns you might find in coral reefs or tree branches. The result? Stunningly intricate forms that are as structurally sound as they are visually captivating. These shapes are then 3D-printed into modular concrete units, each one unique, customizable, and ready to take on tasks ranging from outdoor seating to functional art installations. Think of it as nature-inspired design, but with the precision of advanced engineering.

Designer: SA-Math

Amorphous Concrete owes its brilliance to the collaboration between SA-Math, a Shanghai-based digital fabrication studio, and Xiamen Zhichuangchi Technology Co., Ltd. With designers like Cai Chengzhi and Chen Rongsheng at the helm, the project blends computational wizardry with hands-on expertise. The team’s vision goes beyond aesthetics; they’ve crafted a system that embraces sustainability, reducing material waste while maximizing creativity.

A notable implementation of this technology is a nine-unit demonstration product installed as an outdoor landscape sculpture at Shanghai’s Xinyangwan Technology Venture Park. Here, nine interconnected concrete modules come together as a sculptural centerpiece, serving as both art and utility. The adaptability of these modules means they can be reconfigured, extended, or even replaced without waste, making them ideal for evolving public spaces.

By integrating computational modeling and digital fabrication, Amorphous Concrete offers a sustainable and efficient approach to modern construction challenges. Its ability to produce unique, reconfigurable systems positions it as a forward-thinking solution in the field of modular design. It even secured a Red Dot Award: Design Concept this year, validating it as a proof-of-concept that can be applied at scale.

The beauty of Amorphous Concrete lies in its ability to merge the organic with the industrial. It’s a playful contradiction—rugged yet elegant, adaptable yet enduring. It invites cities, architects, and designers to think differently about the spaces we inhabit. After all, if concrete can grow and evolve, why shouldn’t our cities do the same?
