Called Dice, this innovative and multifunctional furniture piece is designed by the creative minds at Zurich-based Kosmos Architects. This versatile design serves multiple purposes, functioning as a stool, coffee table, leg bench, and lamp. Its unique construction allows you to rotate and position it in various ways to suit your needs, much like the faces of a dice, which is where its name and concept originate.

The Dice furniture piece draws inspiration from the multifaceted nature of traditional dice, with its ability to transform into four distinct types of furniture. This makes it a unique and versatile addition to any living space.

While it doesn’t resemble a dice in appearance, its multifunctionality captures the essence of this classic object. Over the past years, we’ve seen dogs play a bigger part in their humans’ lifestyle. They’re no longer just pets but are already part of families, with their owners calling themselves fur parents. We’ve also seen more products in the market for them and not all of them are merely functional. A lot of thought has gone into the designs for some of these products, including dog houses.

Designer: Kenya Hara (curator)

The Architecture for Dogs exhibition is one such proof of the importance that we’re giving to our canine friends. Their latest stop is at Milan’s ADI Design Museum where they show off various ramps, cushions, mats, benches, and of course kennels and shelters that were designed specifically for certain breeds to strengthen their bonds with their humans. These designs are also available to download for free so that users can build their own versions of these architectures and adapt them to their dogs’ needs.

The pieces in the exhibit are pretty interesting and unique. The Cloud was cerated by Reiser + Umemoto as a second skin for a chihuahua to protect the dog from the cold as well as general protection for its bones. It actually looks like a dress but is designed as a “climatic buffer”. Konstantin Grcic designed a bed for a toy poodle that has a mirror since owners have said their pets respond to mirrors. There is also a sustainable aspect to some of the designs, like Shigeru Ban’s maze and bed for a papillon or continental toy spaniel since it’s made from connected cardboard tubes.

Since it’s the exhibit’s Italian debut, two contributions from local designers were also added. Giulio Iaccheti created a round, plywood-panelled kennel specifically for an Italian greyhound, looking like a tent complete with a red velvet cushion and with a small scarlet flag on top of its house. Piero Lissoni meanwhile crafted a plywood and aluminum kennel for a Yorkiepoo, inspired by of all things, an airport hangar.

As long as a chair is something I can sit on and I’m pretty comfortable, I’d take any kind of chair. But of course there are designs and concepts of chairs that bring a different dimension to a functional piece of furniture. Some of those well-designed chairs though can be quite uncomfortable, particularly the backrest.

Designers: Gerhardt Kellerman and Ana Relvao

Yay is a chair that’s part of Gumpo’s office furniture line that has a pretty unconventional backrest but one that seems to be a comfortable one despite its shape. It’s a compact upholstered statement chair with its seat, backseat, and legs, all covered in fabric, presenting a “soft, textile unit” in one seemingly continuous shape.

The backrest is “intelligently padded” so despite its stick like shape, it is surprisingly comfortable as it molds to your back because of the texture. It is also a proportioned compact chair that can fit into any seating environment, whether it’s at a table, as a stand-alone chair, a working chair, or wherever you need a comfortable seat.

Despite its minimalist look and its muted color, the Yay chair is pretty eye-catching and is marketed as a statement chair. It goes well with Gumpo’s other chair, the Ohh with the more traditional backrest and the two are meant to compliment each other and the other furniture of the brand.

It’s a given fact that a lot of musicians are pretty stylish. Sure they have their actual stylists and designers or their style may not be to everyone’s taste but they sure know how to rock a dress or design their apartment. So it’s no surprise that a lot of these celebrities have their own fashion line. Some have even gone so far as to come up with a lifestyle brand all their own.

Designer: Homemade (A$ap Rocky)

A$ap Rocky first launched his creative design studio in 2022 and for this year’s Design Miami, he unveiled his Galaxy collection which is described as a “deeper look into what a surreal retro-futuristic lifestyle would look like from the POV of a Satellite.” This retro-futuristic collection was created in collaboration with Italian manufacturer Gufram who was also their partner in their previous design collaboration.

The centerpiece of this collection is the CBNT.V1, a speaker cabinet that has massive speakers and some retro elements like vintage controls, VHS and cassette tape imagery but with supposedly futuristic elements. There’s also cushions with skyscraper imagery and a projector lamp that looks like a satellite. There’s also a 300 cm x 300 cm carpet that has three-dimensional New York City high rise buildings on it.

Even though it’s described as retro-futuristic, there isn’t much futuristic about it although retro is pretty much present. But in case this design aesthetic is your thing, you can already purchase any of the items by emailing them as there is no website to purchase these items.

There’s a certain expectation that chairs will always be an elevated platform to rest our bodies above the ground. While that’s generally true almost everywhere, there are some cultures that also adopt a different style of sitting. Some, for example, sit cross-legged, often on the floor, and take that position in a variety of circumstances, whether it’s when meditating, eating, or even just lounging around.

Unfortunately, the majority of chair designs don’t accommodate this sitting style, leaving people to settle for cushions and pillows. These can shield their bodies from the hardness of the floor and keep their clothes clean, but they have nothing to offer in terms of comfort, stability, and enjoyment. This concept design tries to address that glaring absence to make cross-legged seating just as good as sitting up on a chair.

Admittedly, sitting cross-legged, whether on the floor or even a bed or couch, isn’t exactly an easy task for some people. But even those used to such a position often experience discomfort and inconvenience over a short period of time. It’s almost ironic that it’s one of the positions often associated with meditation and calmness despite how it makes most people uncomfortable. Part of that problem, however, is simply due to the lack of proper support for the sitting style.

The Sway chair concept aims to help promote this sitting position and lifestyle with a piece of furniture that brings the convenience and security of regular chairs to the floor. The most important detail of this design is actually the backrest that lets people lean back and relax with confidence, encouraging a lounging posture even when sitting cross-legged. The bottom of the chair is curved rather than flat, allowing the user to gently rock themselves as well.

Interestingly, Sway has two armrests with different heights. The higher one acts as your typical armrest to place your elbow when sitting back and lounging. The lower one, however, has a notch near the front for gripping when rocking the chair or shifting position. The design delivers the stability and security that simple pillows and cushions lack.

In terms of aesthetics, Sway adopts a more nature-inspired design using wood materials and earthy tones. It does use a steel rod to provide the skeleton that joins these pieces together, but it almost disappears into the background due to its plain and unassuming appearance. It’s a design that immediately evokes calmness and oneness with nature, images that are immediately associated with the cross-legged sitting position.

Like any other piece of furniture, a chair can become more than a functional product. It can also be an art object or a statement piece that adds value to an area, elevating it from a drab room to a luxury space. Of course, it’s easier said than done, because exaggerated designs, no matter how luxurious, can also have the opposite effect.

One doesn’t need to go overboard with materials and details to create eye-catching furniture. Sometimes the simple fusion of two contrasting materials can already add points of interest, at least if they’re done in a tasteful way. This concept for a luxury office chair tries to apply that principle in a way that almost makes it look like wood is growing out of stone.

While most designs call for complementary characteristics, contrast can sometimes work better in creating a more beautiful and more engaging compositions. Black and white, soft and hard, natural and artificial, these put two seemingly opposite properties together in a way that challenges not only the mind of the viewer but also the creativity of the designer. After all, it’s not trivial to combine two diametrically opposed things and still make them look like a unified product.

ZYVOR is a concept for a luxury chair that combines wood and marble, one known for its warmth while the other for its coolness. Although marble needs more processing than wood, both are considered natural or sustainable materials to some extent, even if they have different and contrasting personalities in people’s minds. Wood, after all, is sourced from a living thing while marble and stone are instead grafted and chiseled.

In addition to the contrasting sources, the forms of these two materials also seem to be juxtaposed, almost the opposite of their natural properties. The chair’s marble base starts out as a cylinder but then bends upward in an organic curve like the stem of a plant. The wooden seat, in contrast, is naturally curved but looks like it was carved out of a larger piece, almost like stone.

The end result of this combination of contrasting elements is a sophisticated chair design that feels like it sprouted and grew up in an organic and natural manner. Its elegant and slender design belies the stability it offers, thanks to the marble and wood wrapping around each other. It might look a little overkill for an office chair, but it definitely stands out as a premium piece that enhances the ambiance of any room it’s in.

There are chairs that look very pretty and artsy but are probably not the most comfortable place to sit on. I’m the kind of person that would care more about a chair’s functionality rather than its design, as long as it’s comfortable and would let me sit on it for a long time. But there are those that also can be both and this new one from furniture brand Heller seems like it is.

The Limbo Chair is something that you can use either indoor or outdoor. Its “swooping, sculptural form” makes it look like an art piece you can find at a museum but since it’s a chair foremost, it was also designed to “balance flexibility and support, playfulness and durability.” They say it’s comfortable enough to be able to use it while you’re resting, reading a book, or just sitting without agenda.

The other special thing about this chair is that it is 100% recyclable. It uses a high percentage of recycled plastic polyethylene blend. What percentage of the material this is depends on the color, with black being the highest. It is available in warm and neutral colors like black, bone, sand, terra cotta, wheat, and cantaloupe, to blend in whatever environment you place it in.

The chair seems to be low enough for you to relax in, although I don’t know if I can last in it even though I’m not the tallest person. It will look good though if you add it to your space especially if one of the available colors matches your aesthetics.
